Denver Historical Events
Creation of the Denver Mint (1906) - One of the few U.S. mints outside Philadelphia.
The creation of the Denver Mint in 1906 marked a significant milestone in the history of U.S. coinage, as it became one of the few U.S. mints located outside Philadelphia. Established by an Act of Congress on April 21, 1862, the Denver Mint opened for business in late 1863 as a United States Assay Office. However, it wasn't until 1906 that the mint began producing coins for release to the public, advancing its status to a Branch Mint. The opening of the Denver Mint was delayed due to the new machinery being sent to the St. Louis Exposition of 1904 for display, but by 1906, coining presses were finally striking coins, marking the beginning of a new era for the Denver Mint.
The Denver Mint's first coins were produced on February 1, 1906, and it quickly became a significant producer of coins, with 167 million coins being produced in its inaugural year. These coins consisted of various denomination silver coins, $20 Double Eagles, $10 Eagles, and $5 Half Eagles. The mint's location in the building that was built in 1904 at the corner of West Colfax and Delaware has remained a historical landmark, symbolizing the rich legacy of coin production in Denver. The Denver Mint's contribution to the coinage industry has been substantial, and it continues to play a vital role in the production of U.S. coins, making it an integral part of the nation's numismatic history.
In 2006, the United States Mint at Denver celebrated 100 years of service to the American people, commemorating the centennial of its first coin production. The mint has achieved several milestones over the years, including a world record for manufacturing more than 15 billion circulating coins. The Denver Mint's enduring legacy and its role in shaping the nation's coinage system make it a cherished institution, reflecting the spirit of innovation and progress in the field of numismatics.
