Denver Historical Events

Red Rocks Amphitheatre Opens (1941) - A unique and historic concert venue.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre, located just 10 miles west of Denver, is a historic and iconic concert venue that opened its doors to the public on June 15, 1941. The amphitheatre, with a seating capacity of 9,525, is nestled within the stunning natural rock formations of Red Rocks Park, creating a unique and awe-inspiring setting for live performances. The venue's distinctive design, featuring a large, tilted, disc-shaped rock behind the stage and a huge vertical rock angled downwards from stage right, contributes to its exceptional acoustics, providing concert-goers with an unforgettable audio experience.

The history of Red Rocks Amphitheatre dates back to the 1920s when Denver purchased the area for the construction of the venue. Construction began in 1936, and the amphitheatre officially opened to the public in 1941 with a performance by Helen Jepson of New York's Metropolitan Opera singing "Ave Maria." Since then, Red Rocks has become a premiere concert venue, hosting some of the biggest tours and attracting world-renowned musicians. The venue's rich history, natural beauty, and exceptional acoustics make it a must-visit destination for music lovers and a cherished landmark for the city of Denver.

Over the years, Red Rocks Amphitheatre has played a significant role in Denver's cultural landscape, hosting historic events such as the first Easter sunrise service in 1947 and welcoming legendary musicians like The Beatles on their first U.S. tour in 1964. Today, Red Rocks continues to be a beloved and revered concert venue, attracting music enthusiasts from around the world and solidifying its status as a unique and historic gem in the heart of Colorado.
